Why is Harakeke Seed Oil good for the skin?

Our skin cells rely on fatty acids to function optimally, yet many of these essential fats cannot be synthesised by the body. Harakeke seed oil is a naturally rich source of these vital fatty acids, containing high levels of omega 3, 6 and 9.

When applied topically, these fatty acids help nourish the skin and support the restoration of depleted cellular components. One of the most important of these is linoleic acid, an essential omega-6 fatty acid that the body cannot produce on its own.

Harakeke seed oil contains approximately 70% linoleic acid, making it exceptionally effective at supporting the skin barrier, maintaining hydration, and helping restore balance to dry or compromised skin.

The Role of Phytosterols in Skin Health

Phytosterols are plant-derived compounds that are structurally similar to cholesterol and are found naturally in plant cell membranes. They are well known in nutrition for their ability to compete with cholesterol absorption in the digestive system, helping reduce blood cholesterol levels.

Less widely known is the fact that phytosterols are also present in the lipids on the surface of human skin. Research has shown that plant sterols absorbed through the diet can be transferred from the bloodstream to the skin, where they become part of the skin’s surface lipid structure.

In simple terms, this means our skin cells rely on some of the same biochemical building blocks as plant cells. Harakeke seed oil naturally provides these compounds, helping to support healthy, resilient skin.

Our Harakeke Seed Oil Night Cream is further enriched with coconut oil and shea butter, creating a deeply moisturising formulation that supports overnight skin repair.

This makes it especially beneficial when skin has been exposed to dry, harsh conditions — whether during cold winter months or in summer climates. The cream helps restore moisture levels, improve hydration, and support the skin’s natural barrier function.

A small amount is all that’s needed to deliver intensive nourishment and allow the bioactive ingredients to work effectively while you sleep.
