No, Aotea products have never been tested on animals.

No, all ingredients are derived from natural sources, including the ingredients used to scent our products.
• What is the shelf life of Aotea products?
All Aotea products are formulated with natural ingredients, including our preservatives, giving them a shelf life of 3 years.
• How should I store my products?
We recommend storing products out of direct sunlight in a cool, dark place. Lids should always be closed after use, and the bottle should be stored upright.

Our box packaging and jars are all recyclable.
• Does Aotea offer refills?
We are currently working towards circular solutions to encourage the reuse of our packaging. Refill services will be offered in the foreseeable future.
• Are your postal bags compostable?
Yes, we use compostable bags provided by r3pack, a New Zealand owned business. Each bag is made with corn starch, PLA, and PBAT, and uses non-toxic inks as a natural alternative to traditional plastic-based courier bags.
• Does Aotea support any community initiatives or donate money to charities?
Yes, we are proud to say that for every year we have been in business, we have provided scholarships to our rangatahi Māori (Māori youth) from Aotea to attend high school, and we are in the process of creating more jobs for whānau on the island.
Handmade In Aotea
All Aotea products are handmade on Aotea (Great Barrier Island) New Zealand using native flora grown, harvested, extracted, and bottled by our team. Our ingredients are predominantly natural, with a focus on organic sources whenever feasible. While we prioritize organic ingredients, it's essential to acknowledge that not all can be certified organic due to being wild-harvested, reflecting the unique nature of our island-based production process.

The Kawakawa plant is species native to New Zealand. It contains the plant active Diayangambin, which is a naturally occurring anti-inflammatory that can help with your scalp care. Harakeke is a flax species that is also native to New Zealand. The oil from Harakeke seeds is rich in Linoleic acid and Omegas 3, 6, and 9, which nourish the scalp and hair. They help to lock in the moisture, which keeps your hair looking healthier and smoother.

Suitable for all hair types, including dry, damaged, and sensitive scalps
Directions
After shampooing, apply a generous amount of Kawakawa conditioner to damp hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Leave on for 1-2 minutes to allow the nourishing ingredients to penetrate the hair shaft. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. For extra conditioning, leave the Kawakawa conditioner on for longer or use as a deep conditioning treatment. Use regularly for silky, healthy-looking hair.

Kawakawa is revered among Māori as being super healing and restorative. We pick the Kawakawa leaves from our land on Aotea. Our Kawakawa extract is 100% natural and made by steeping the leaves for one week in sweet almond oil.
