Kawakawa - Everything You Need To Know About This Amazing Native Plant

Kawakawa (Macropiper excelsum) is a herbaceous shrub native to New Zealand. It has knobbly joints, branching stems, and distinctive large, heart-shaped dark green leaves that are sometimes slightly glossy.
There are also offshore island species of Macropiper, including varieties found in the Kermadec Islands and on Three Kings Island.
What Were Kawakawa Leaves Traditionally Used For?
Kawakawa leaves were traditionally used to prepare herbal remedies. Leaves were steeped in hot water to create infusions that released their natural flavours, aromas, and beneficial minerals. These teas were commonly consumed to soothe the digestive system.
The leaves were also used in poultices applied topically to treat skin abrasions and ailments. There are historical accounts of people chewing kawakawa leaves to relieve toothache. Kawakawa is widely regarded as one of the most medicinal and healing plants of the New Zealand bush.
Where Is the Kawakawa Plant Found in New Zealand?
Kawakawa naturally grows in the coastal and lowland forests of the North Island and the northern half of the South Island. It prefers moist, rich, free-draining soil and thrives in semi-shade to shaded environments.
Although it can tolerate wind, kawakawa is frost tender. It is often found growing beneath the canopy of larger trees, such as pines, as it does not require large amounts of direct sunlight.
Is the Kawakawa Plant Edible?
Yes, kawakawa is edible. The leaves have a peppery, bitter flavour, and when consumed in larger amounts can create a mild numbing sensation in the mouth.
What Are the Health Benefits of Kawakawa?
Kawakawa has been used in traditional rongoā Māori for centuries. The leaves contain a compound called myristicin, which helps trigger the release of nitric oxide from cells. Nitric oxide plays a key role in the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response.
This response helps soothe inflammation, reduce blemishes, and support the healing of rashes and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. The anti-inflammatory effect can be strong enough to create a numbing sensation, which explains its traditional use for relieving toothache.
