Te Whare Tapa Whā

Te Whare Tapa Whā is a model of hauora (health and wellbeing) developed by psychiatrist Professor Sir Mason Durie in 1984.
The model conceives of hauora in terms of a whare. A whare has whā tapa (four walls). Unless all four walls are strong, the whare is unstable and weak.
Hauora is composed of a taha tinana (physical health), a taha wairua (how you find your inner peace, meaning and purpose), a taha whanau (are you talking with friends and family?) and a taha hinengaro (mental and emotional). We need all four walls of the house for strength and stability.
The Whare Tapa Whā reminds us to pay attention to all the components of hauora. Good relationships should be balanced by good mental and emotional health, an ability to find inner peace and good physical health.
